KBps vs. kbps
Jul 2nd
There are some people out there that get really confused when it comes to download speeds, which is measured in KB/s / MB/s (kilobytes per second / megabytes per second), and what speed you are provisioned at with a high speed internet provider, which is measured in kbps / mbps (kilobits per second / megabits per second). The rule of thumb to remember is that there are 8 bits in a byte. Here are some speeds below that Buckeye Express offers and roughly what speed you should download files at.
- 150 kbps (kilobits per second) = 18.75 kB/s (kilobytes per second).
- 2 Mbps (megabits per second) = 250 kB/s (kilobytes per second).
- 8 Mbps (megabits per second) = 1 MB/s (megabyte per second).
- 12 Mbps (megabits per second) = 1.5 MB/s (megabytes per second).
- 20 Mbps (megabits per second) = 2.5 MB/s (megabytes per second).

With the above results from Speedtest.net, I could download at 2.69 MB/s (megabytes per second). Which means I could download a 1 GB (gigabyte) file in about 6.2 minutes (372 seconds).
DNS

Do you know what DNS is? DNS (Domain Name System) is fundamental to the Internet. You use the DNS every time you do anything online including sending email and browsing the web. Most networks use the DNS provided by their ISP or run their own small DNS server. I personally have used OpenDNS for the past couple years & love it. When my ISP is having a DNS issue, I’m one of the few customers’ that isn’t effected.

OpenDNS protects more than a million people a day across hundreds of thousands of schools, businesses and homes as they navigate the Internet. They block phishing sites and give you the power to block adult sites, proxies, and individual domains.
Some of their features include:
I suggest switching to OpenDNS, but that is my humble opinion.
Wireless Woes
Sep 26th
For quite some time now, I’ve been having speed issues with my wireless desktop. I swapped out my wireless USB adapter and purchased a Linksys wireless PCI adapter (G) & my desktop connection was still only getting around 7.0Mbps down (I have BEX 10.0). I started to Google around and finally found a fix. I downloaded the TCP Optimizer and after it tweaked my system, my speeds are where they should be now:

On my laptop (iBook), my speeds were great & never had a problem. So, if you are experiencing the same issues as I have described above, try downloading the TCP Optimizer.
